Chivalry 2 is gorgeous

Unread postby » rodeoneerer » Thu, 23 June 2022, 9:01 am | #1 of 1  Reply

If Chivalry 2 has taught me anything, it’s that there are multiple ways to kill a man using a chicken. I’ve thrown them, I’ve swung them. I’ve stuck them on a catapult and hurled them at unsuspecting archers who probably placed “getting hit in the face by a 40-mile-an-hour chicken” pretty low on the list of things they expected out of a Tuesday. My flailing, ironclad arse sailing over the walls immediately after was probably even lower.

Perhaps surprisingly, this isn’t a bad thing at all. The combat is good enough that a skilled player can hold their own against overwhelming odds, channelling Arthurian legends, parrying and countering blows with preternatural swiftness, before cleaving mobs of lesser warriors in twain with mighty sweeping blows. Other players simply run into battle to have their heads instantly detached from their body. One minute you’re mounting a glorious charge with your fellow soldiers, and the next you’re watching them lose arms, getting peppered with an assortment of thrown objects (live chickens, cooked turkeys, anvils, balls of dung), or getting obliterated by ballista fire and errant catapult projectiles.

While it may be simplistic, that singular focus is all Chivalry 2 needs to succeed. The siege warfare and fighting pit set dressing enhance the experience, but Chivalry 2's frantic engagements would still be compelling in a padded room. It doesn't command players to master each of its concepts if they want to be competitive, it simply tells them to charge at one another and cause a bit of chaos, screaming battle cries as they meet their grisly doom.

Each class and subclass has a unique ability. For example, the Archer can drop a lit brazier and ignite their arrows. The Vanguard can throw a pot of burning oil. The Knight can blow a war-horn to heal allies and the Guardian can plant a banner for group buffs. As a footman, you can throw bandage packs to save lives or drop a spike trap. These skills all synergise well in the heat of battle, allowing you to work together with minimum direct communication. An emote wheel allows you to issue commands, say thanks, or insult the enemy, among many other things.

In terms of the actual combat, there are four classes in the game, Archer, Vanguard, Foot Men and Knight. Each class has their own subclasses that come with specific gear and deployables, so whilst a Knight Officer might have access to an area of effect heal (activated by tooting a horn) the Guardian comes with a shield and a banner that you can put down to heal allies over time. Each subclass also has access to a set of primary and secondary weapons, all with their own pros and cons, which is where the combat starts to shine.

Not to mention, Chivalry 2 is gorgeous. The way the sun reflects off armor, the details on some of the weapons, and the mud that coats the battlefield all combine for a game that's visually appealing, despite clearly being a lower-budget endeavor. Again, the core experience found within Chivalry 2 is already engaging enough to make its visuals feel secondary, but good looks are the icing on the cake.

Although Chivalry 2 might look like a brain-dead hack and slasher from the outside, it really is more than that. There’s an element of skill that will separate those at its upper levels, but won’t stop newcomers joining in. Combat is thrilling and fun, objectives are clear, and each map is detailed and authentic. Most importantly, it feels fresh. There aren’t many other games out there doing this, certainly not with this level of humour. It’s built for fun and accessibility, and might be one of my biggest surprises so far this year.
