Sitemaps is an type of archive which contains the all url's of your websites. There are two types of sitemaps.
1. XML Sitemaps - XML sitemaps helps to search engine crawlers to tell about your each url information that how important it is in other url and how often it changes. It also allows the search engine crawlers to crawl the site easily.
2. HTML Sitemaps - HTML sitemap is user friendly to tell the user about your website's url hierarchy.

A sitemap is very important in SEO in a way if you want your web pages to be indexed by Google very soon.

HTML sitemap is a plain text sitemap used by browsers to know and surf through your website pages. XML sitemap is a coded sitemap used to submit in webmaster tool to help spiders crawl them and index the webpages in search engines.
