This video was a great education for me, Matt Cutts talks a bit about hummingbird at 6:30 into the video and heaps of other really cool Googley stuff too so I would reckon it's worth watching the whole thing. :)

Hummingbird is about synonyms but also about context. Google always had synonyms, but with Hummingbird it is also able to judge context - thereby judging the intent of a person carrying out a search, to determine what they are trying to find out.

The Hummingbird update was the first major update to Google's search algorithm since the 2010 "Caffeine Update", but even that was limited primarily to improving the indexing of information rather than sorting of information.

The Hummingbird update was a major update to Google's search algorithm since the 2010 "Caffeine Update". Unlike previous search algorithms which would focus on each individual word in the search query, The goal is that pages matching the meaning do better, rather than pages matching just a few words.

Hummingbird was an algorithm launched by google, according to this algorithm, which was a major change in the search engine, now google just don't look at the keywords independently, it just try to figure out what the searchers intent is, and the google gives the search results according to the user intent, it is also called semantic search. Now the search engine works for meaning of the sentence rather than keywords.
