can rankings change drastically?

Unread postby » genieswish » Sat, 26 May 2012, 10:56 am | #1 of 12 |

Need some help with this one! According to statcounter one of my main keywords is ranking at #5 on google.com - but if i do a search it's nowhere to be found! is it possible that the post jumps in on the rankings when it's first indexed and then drops to oblivion after a couple of hours?

i have seen this a few times myself and haven't been able to work it out, i do think sometimes while the topic is fresh and being added to it has more weight but i have never looked into the workings of the algorithms.

I'll have to dig a lttle deeper i think - i had 14 views in 10 mins yesterday with one keyword ranking at #5, then all traffic stopped just as suddenly, maybe goolge made a mistake with it lol - if i could just make it hold there even for a day I'd be delighted!

You have to remember Google and the other search engines have several sites they pull information from. For example, one of my sites ranks really high if you are in California, but if you are in Florida you cannot even find my site listed. So this is what I think the problem is for your site.

I've seen the rankings for some sites change by the hour. That's what makes keeping a site at the top so hard.

Trident, I have never seen them change that dramatic! I have had one Squidoo which has topped Google for 3 years now. However, it has slipped to number two behind my hubpage article on the same topic. Nothing in the hours, though.

From what I understand, they do change frequently if not constantly. My website's barely a week old and I had my first search engine hit the other day. When I went to search using the same keywords, I couldn't find myself in the first 10 pages. I tried using one of the ranking websites to check and the one that didn't require me to sign up didn't find me in the first 1,000 results. So, go figure!

Yes some sites are updated all the time, news and press media for example can be indexed within minutes of publishing. Google measures many factors like what type of site it is, link quality and quantity, content, bounce rate, amount of time spent on site, click through rate, etc. etc. which can shift indexing around. If I were running a search engine I would want to produce the most up to date, relevant quality content.

Bonny, that is called the Google bounce. They tend to bounce you all over the place for the first month or so. Then they will decide where they want you to be at and keep you there for a while.

About the changings I know only a single thing: if you are logged in into any of your Google accounts, for example gmail, when you are doing the search, your page will show always in the first page. And if you are logged out, your page is showing in his real place: maybe in the first page, maybe not!

Absolutely! It really depends on how often you're working on your site. Which also has to do with the traffic of your viewers.
