Patek Philippe Cubitus Collection Watches



Patek Philippe has launched its new Cubitus collection to great fanfare and mixed reactions among watch enthusiasts and collectors.

Following our introductory overview of the collection, this hands-on review with our exclusive live photos takes a closer look at the three debut models: the steel Ref. 5821/1A; the steel and rose gold Ref. 5821/1AR; and the platinum Ref. 5822P.

The new Cubitus watches embody Patek Philippe’s vision of an “elegant sporty” watch, standing out with their square shape.

The square bezel features rounded corners and combines elements of the square, circle, and octagon.

The case consists of two parts, assembled from the front, with two attachments on each side, reminiscent of the iconic Nautilus models.

All three new models have a 45mm diameter (10-4 o'clock), but vary in thickness: 8.3mm for the steel and steel/rose gold models, 9.6mm for the platinum model. The platinum model is also slightly wider (3-9 o'clock, including the crown), at 44.9mm, compared to 44.5mm for the other two.

The screw-down crown is engraved with the Geneva Seal - the Calatrava cross. Water-resistant to a pressure of up to 3 bar (equivalent to a depth of approximately 30 metres/100 feet).

The alternating satin-brushed and polished finishes accentuate the lines of the watch: vertical satin-brushed on the bezel flats and case front, polished on the bezel chamfers and case sides. Needless to say, the craftsmanship is impeccable, as you would expect from a high-end luxury watch.

Like all Patek Philippe platinum models, the reference 5822P features a diamond (here for the first time in a baguette-cut) on the bezel at 6 o'clock.

The dial of the new Cubitus is protected by an anti-reflective sapphire crystal and is embellished with a horizontal relief pattern, another element inspired by the Nautilus and also found on the rotor and mini-rotor of the movement that powers the Cubitus.

The Cubitus reference 5821/1A features an elegant olive green hue and is embellished with a delicate sunburst pattern. The applied white gold baton hour markers and the round hour and minute hands are coated with white luminous material that gives off a green sheen in low light. The date window at 3 o'clock is surrounded by a white gold inlaid frame.

The blue sunburst dial of the Cubitus reference 5821/1AR is particularly eye-catching. The baton hour-markers, the round hour and minute hands, and the frame surrounding the date display are all in rose gold, contrasting with the blue dial background.

The Cubitus Instantaneous Grand Date, Day and Moon Phases Reference 5822P-001 also features a blue dial with baton hour-markers and round baton hour and minute hands, all in white gold.

The big date is displayed in a double aperture at 12 o'clock via two coplanar discs. The coaxial day and moon phase indications are at 7 o'clock, with a small asymmetrical subsidiary seconds counter at 4:30. The caseback of the new Cubitus displays the movement through a round sapphire crystal porthole.

Both the Ref. 5821/1A in steel and the Ref. 5821/1AR in steel and rose gold are powered by the Calibre 26-330 SC automatic movement, based on the Calibre 26-330 introduced in 2019. The “26-330” designation refers to its 26.6 mm diameter and 3.3 mm thickness.

This movement is equipped with a stop-seconds mechanism that enables the watch to synchronize with a time signal. It beats at 4 Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) and has a power reserve of 35 to 45 hours.

The 21K gold central rotor is decorated with the same horizontal pattern as the dial, adding a cohesive design element.

For the reference 5822P, Patek Philippe developed the new automatic Calibre 240 PS CI J LU and filed six patent applications for its innovation.

These include ensuring perfect alignment of the large date numerals in both windows, preventing double jumps in the tens digits when the date changes from 31 to 01 (or when the watch is subjected to shock), efficient energy distribution to allow simultaneous jumps within 18 milliseconds, and allowing all displays (including time and date) to be corrected at any time without damaging the movement or interfering with the displays.

The movement features three pushers on the side of the case for adjusting the date, day of the week, and moon phases. As a “simple” calendar watch, it requires manual adjustment on the first day of March, May, July, October, and December.

The moon phase display is accurate to within one day every 122 years, while the movement operates to Patek Philippe’s stringent 2024 standards with an accuracy tolerance of -1 to +2 seconds per 24 hours, meeting the requirements of the Patek Philippe Seal.

The 22K gold off-center mini-rotor is decorated with the same horizontal line pattern as the dial.

Two of the three Cubitus models come with an integrated metal bracelet with the same alternating finishing pattern as the case – vertically satin-brushed main links and polished center links.

Comfort and security are ensured by the lockable size adjustment system and the patented Patek Philippe folding clasp secured by four separate buckles.

The platinum model is paired with a navy blue strap with cream contrast stitching, made of an ultra-resistant composite material and embossed with fabric. The platinum folding clasp is engraved with the name of the Cubitus collection.

As mentioned at the beginning of our article, the design of the new Cubitus has sparked mixed reviews. It is worth noting that square watches are generally less popular than round watches, which may affect its appeal to a wider audience. However, we found this watch to be more balanced on the wrist. We are sure that you will like this watch more and more over time.

Despite its 45 mm diameter, it is comfortable to wear and well-proportioned for an average wrist, thanks to the lack of lugs. For reference, the wrist size shown in our photos is 17.8 cm (7 inches).
